York is nowhere near the financial threshold where faculty layoffs can be considered! See Article 24 of our Collective Agreement

The Employer’s VSA announcement misleadingly states that salaries make up 71% of York’s operating expenses and the Employer wants to “limit unwanted job loss”.  Members are urged to read Article 24 of the YUFA Collective Agreement, which makes clear that only when “total bargaining unit” (total YUFA) salaries and benefits represent more than 39.46% of the University’s Operating Budget can a detailed process be instituted to consider faculty layoffs.   Currently, total YUFA salaries and benefits make up less than 23% of York’s Operating Budget.  The “financial necessity” layoff provisions of Article 24 provide strong job protection for tenure-stream faculty members.
