The York University Faculty Association (YUFA) is the union representing 1600 faculty, librarians/archivists, and post-doctoral visitors at York University. We are seeking to fill two full-time vacancies for the position of Executive Associate/Staff Representative in an active union office located on York's Keele campus. One position is a permanent appointment and the second will be for an 8 month contract. Both appointments have an anticipated start date between April 18, 2022 and May 16, 2022 and involve a probationary period of three months.
Working in a collaborative environment with YUFA elected officers and staff, and under the direction of the president and the executive, the successful candidates will perform a number of membership services duties.
All staff are responsible for advising members on issues and inquiries regarding the collective agreement, dealing with issues of contract administration, and handling complaints and grievances. The ideal candidate for the permanent position will additionally have experience providing expert advice and logistical support to the Executive and other member-driven committees including Stewards’ Council. The candidate will also ideally have experience supporting elected officers in the areas of communications and member mobilization. Specific experience with member support in the tenure and promotion process would be a significant asset for either position.
Candidates require a graduate degree or equivalent experience. Candidates should have a significant understanding of and experience with labour relations in the university and/or postsecondary education sector, the ability to exercise excellent judgment and discretion working in a diverse unionized environment, ability to balance competing priorities, good interpersonal skills, the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Excellent oral and written communications skills are a preference, as is proficiency in MS office and basic website and document management activities.
Experience working for unions, academic staff associations, and/or progressive social and political organizations in the public sector is a definite asset. Experience with collective bargaining, collegial governance, and knowledge of a variety of postsecondary policy issues would also be an asset, as would the ability to speak/understand French.
Probationary hire rate is $118,530.50 annually pro-rated for the length of the contract plus an excellent benefits plan in a unionized work environment.
