Stand in Solidarity with Lakehead and Algoma Faculty!

Across Ontario, academic workers are facing a difficult time in postsecondary education. We are our union, and when we act together across institutions, we are better able to defend fair working conditions, fair pay and public education. Today we are asking all YUFA members to support our colleagues at Lakehead University and Algoma University. Each campaign is open now, and each letter helps.

Supporting LUFA at Lakehead University

The Lakehead University Faculty Association (LUFA) represents faculty and library workers who are bargaining for a new collective agreement. LUFA is asking supporters to help avert a strike. Its campaign calls for smaller classes, more course options, stronger research opportunities for students, and the ability to recruit and keep colleagues. It also points to innovative programs and a more positive impact on local communities.

You can help. Send a short letter to the Lakehead Board of Governors through LUFA’s negotiations page. Each letter shows the Board that colleagues across Ontario are paying attention. It takes a few minutes.

Supporting Algoma University part-time faculty

Part-time faculty at Algoma University teach most of the university’s courses. They are bargaining for a fair collective agreement and asking for fair wages and recognition for cancelled courses. Their proposals aim to bring stability and continuity for faculty and students. Last-minute cancellations, unpredictable work and low wages can also affect students, who may lose access to courses and experienced instructors.

Send a short letter to Algoma’s senior administration through the Action Network letter campaign. The form lets you choose York University as your campus and Supporter as your relationship to Algoma. Please check algomaufaculty.ca for the latest updates on bargaining.

Why this matters to us

When members at one university stand up, it helps colleagues everywhere. Class sizes, stable work and fair pay are issues we all know from our own departments. Our next round of bargaining begins in 2027. We would want the same support from other faculty associations, and we can start building those relationships now. If you can, please forward this news post to a colleague in your department.
