Office Telephones

In the 2024-2027 Renewal Collective Agreement, the University and YUFA agreed to amend article 18.39 of the collective agreement regarding office phones as follows:

“The Employer recognizes its responsibility to provide an adequate level of facilities and services in support of the work of employees, including provision of reasonable office, studio, and laboratory space, telephone when requested and/or to fulfill health and safety requirements, secretarial, library, duplicating, and computing support services.”

As a result, deans have been writing to YUFA members that individual faculty phones will be removed unless a request has been made to maintain the phone. Please make sure to reply if you wish to continue to have a York University phone. Write directly to the dean’s office to note that you wish to keep your phone (and keep a copy of the email). You do not need to provide a rationale. Departments and Faculty Councils may also make these requests that phones be continued.   Please notify colleagues who may be on leave or sabbatical about this.

As a reminder, please note the following regarding safety calls on campus.

Emergencies and Urgent Situations: For life-threatening situations where people or property are at immediate risk, call 911 first, then call Security at 416-736-5333 or for TTY (teletypewriter), 416-736-5470.

Non-Urgent Safety Matters: To report a non-urgent safety incident to Security Services, call 416-650-8000 or for TTY, 416-736-5470.

Around campus, there are Blue Light Emergency Phones, Classroom Phones, and Interior Safety Phones. YUFA has asked the Employer to ensure these are working.

Another safety service is goSAFE, where students escort York community members to and from on-campus locations, such as parking lots and bus stops or residences. Operating hours are from 6:00 PM to 2:00 AM in the Fall/Winter.
