Laurentian University Faculty Association is on strike

In their first round of bargaining following the imposed contract that resulted from Laurentian University’s declaration of insolvency in 2021, members of the Laurentian University Faculty Association are on strike as of Monday, January 19.

Despite a last-minute attempt at mediation over the past weekend, they were unable to make progress on members’ key issues, particularly their pension, which was seriously weakened through Laurentian’s  Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA) insolvency process.  LUFA members also experienced significant salary reductions.

In 2024, federal legislation excluded public universities from the CCAA, but Laurentian is still bound by terms of the CCAA arrangement plan since not all creditors have been paid.  See   https://academicmatters.ca/ocufa-laurentian-and-the-first-and-last-ccaa-proceeding-in-the-university-sector/
