The York University Faculty Association (YUFA) is the union representing 1,500 faculty, librarians and archivists, and post-doctoral visitors at York University. We are seeking to fill two vacancies for the position of Executive Associate/Staff Representative in an active union office located on York’s Keele campus. One position is a permanent appointment and the second will be for a six-month contract with an anticipated start date between February 8, 2021 and March 1, 2021. All appointments involve a probationary period of three months.
Working in a collaborative environment with YUFA elected officers and staff, and under the direction of the President and the Executive Committee, the successful candidates will perform a number of membership services duties. These include advising members on issues and inquiries regarding the Collective Agreement, handling complaints and grievances, advising on issues of contract administration, working in the areas of communications and member mobilization, and providing expert advice and logistical support to the Executive and other committees.
Candidates require a graduate degree or equivalent experience. Candidates should have a significant understanding of and experience with labour relations in the university and/or postsecondary education sector, the ability to exercise excellent judgment and discretion working in a diverse unionized environment, ability to balance competing priorities, good interpersonal skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required, as is proficiency in MS office and basic website and document management activities.
Experience working for unions, academic staff associations, and/or progressive social and political organizations in the public sector is a definite asset. Experience with collective bargaining and knowledge of a variety of postsecondary policy issues would also be an asset, as would the ability to speak/understand French.
Probationary hire rate is $115,752.44 annually pro-rated for the length of the contract plus an excellent benefits plan in a unionized work environment.
