Campus security

At last week's members' drop-in meeting, YUFA members shared information with York University security officers from CUPE 1536. Did you know that security officers wearing yellow vests don't work for York University? They are from an outside security firm named Hydra, one of two firms (the other is Omni) with whom the Employer has security contracts. York University security staff wear grey uniforms (and sometimes red shirts when they are on bikes).

Despite the conclusions and recommendations of the university's 2022 security services review that York should move toward more "community-focused" safety on campus, the Employer is hiring more and more police-oriented firms and individuals, and is proposing to train and deputize "special constables" to work on campus.

Members with security concerns are encouraged to call 911 if there is danger or a security emergency; then 416-658-8000 to reach campus security's emergency number or 416-736-5333 to reach campus security's non-emergency number.

Blue emergency phones are located on campus. Please check to be sure the phone is working and if not, notify YUFA at [email protected]. There is a York University safety app which members can download.

Please copy YUFA at [email protected] on any interaction regarding campus security.

YUFA’s 2024 advisory on campus security contains additional health and safety information.
