Senate approves York’s plan for a new medical school, with private funding still unclear

At its meeting on May 22, despite the absence of assured sources of private-sector funding for new buildings, or even for renovations on the Keele campus to create required labs and classrooms, the York University Senate approved the administration’s proposal for a new School of Medicine.  This will be the eighth medical school in Ontario, and the first to be built without government financing for capital costs – at a time when York University is suspending program admissions, deferring needed maintenance, and predicting large budget deficits for years to come.
