Bargaining Update: Five days of mediated bargaining scheduled over the coming next (August 9, 2024)

YUFA’s Bargaining Team is preparing for intensive bargaining sessions on August 11, 12, 13, 17, and 18.  We will update members by the following day on what happens during each session.

On August 2, YUFA and the Employer entered into a period where either party can legally initiate a work stoppage (strike or lockout). YUFA remains committed to negotiating a fair and equitable agreement without our members or our community going through another labour disruption.

While bargaining continues, YUFA wants to ensure members are fully supported in their workplace. Please contact YUFA at [email protected] if you notice any changes since August 2 in the terms and conditions of your employment, such as the following:

  • Cancellation by the Dean or university staff of previously booked meetings (ie. meetings planned and scheduled before Aug 2).
  • The Dean not appointing members to academic administrative positions normally held in the unit.
  • Dean’s Office directing members to provide service not previously assigned or agreed to.
  • A sudden or new change in workload (unit or individual). This could include assigning more or fewer courses than the norm, or impromptu increases in the size of a currently scheduled class.
  • Being called into a meeting with the Dean that is not related to regular academic activities, and not being advised of the right to YUFA representation.

On a related note, YUFA issued a press release on August 8, titled “York University Professors Defend the Quality of Education at Canada’s Third Largest University: York University Senior Administration Uses Labour Crisis to Cover Up Mismanagement”. Please consider sharing this with your students and on social media.

Lastly, also on August 8, the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) released a statement in support of YUFA.
