JCOAA Report

Normally, the Joint Committee on the Administration of the Agreement (JCOAA) does not hold full meetings with the Employer during bargaining. However, the JCOAA Co-Chair and the Employer's Co-Chair have continued to meet in recent months. Most recently, agreements have been reached on the following issues:

• Use of Teaching Evaluations from Strike-Affected Semesters in Tenure and Promotion

• Protocols for the Appointment of Canada Research Chairs

• Audiotaping of classes for the purposes of student accommodation, including a revised letter to be used by Counselling and Disability Services

• Informing faculty about the process for requesting accommodation for delivery of materials from SMIL

Pension News:

Employer agrees to temporary extension of deadline for retiring members wanting to transfer out their pension

As we have outlined in a previous newsletter, the employer has unilaterally imposed new administrative rules changing the portability provisions of the York University Pension Plan. In particular, the new rules prohibit Plan members from transferring the value of their pension entitlement to a “locked-in” registered retirement savings plan or life income fund if they retire after attaining the age …

McMaster Librarians Vote to Strike in Face of Astonishing Demands for Concessions

On October 9, 2015, the McMaster University Academic Librarians' Association (MUALA) voted unanimously in favour of a strike mandate in the face of major concessions demanded by their employer. These concessions would severely reduce the scope of collegial decision-making in the library and would result in the employer having "almost complete discretion to hire, to assign merit pay, to evaluation performance, and to promote." This summer 100 grade 9 students from the Jane and Finch neighbourhood graduated from SBL summer program. The program was started with the support of YUFA CP and is designed to address low graduation rates in the Jane Finch community by helping student’s transition into high school while earning high school credits.
